Fabric of Nature

An artistic study of my body´s biotope

This project is on one side a scientific process of creating new sustainable materials, biomaterials, and on the other an artistic research of what it means to be part of nature.

The biomaterials that have been explored include: alganyl, bioplastic, eggshell and coffee composites but also living material such as bacteria and mycelium. These materials are based on two different kinds of seaweed, Agar Agar and Sodium Alginate. By mixing the dried seaweed with natural dyes, compost and glycerin there’s a whole spectrum of qualities the materials can inhabit.

The artistic subject of research has been my own body. An inspiration has been the fact that the cells in the human body is approximately 50% microbic cells and 50% human, they all work in symbiosis inside my body. Through understanding the intricate biotope that is the human body, I hope to bring an understanding of what it means to be part of nature.

Mykofilia

The project Mykofilia is a material experiment and the prelude to the project Fabric of Nature. The starting point of the project was an interest in material development for an artistic purpose.

The symbiotic process of creating the sculptures are inspired by the many ways Fungi communicates with the different species around it. In Mykofilia the artist creates the premisses for an oyster mushroom to grow and the fungi stands for the transforming of the fabric. Neither of them are in full control and both are reliant of each other. The result becomes sculptures that has the esthetic look of fabric but are hard and stable. In this way it’s challenging our perception of what fabric is and how it can be used.

”Everything is covered in plastic. The kettle sings in the lunchroom. A strong smell of disinfectant lays in the air. These are the first premises for a successful experiment. Infront of me on the table is strips of hemp fabric, and a jar of mycelium. The boiling water is poured over the fabric, a smell of grass is spreading in the room, mixes with lingering smell of alcohol. At that moment my state of mind changes from the clinical to something living, organic.”  Diary extract 1/11/2021
